Wanatah, IN is a small town with a lot of history. One of the most notable sites in Wanatah is the William F. Hunt Memorial Park. The park was created in honor of one of Wanatah’s most famous residents, William F. Hunt. William F. Hunt was an inventor and businessman who held over 100 patents. He is best known for his work in the development of the paperclip and the stapler.
He also developed a process for manufacturing safety glass, which was used in car windshields and other applications. The William F. William F. Hunt and his family
William F. Hunt was born in Wanatah, Indiana, on March 15, 1847. He was the fourth of seven children born to John and Margaret (Moffitt) Hunt. His father was a carpenter and farmer, and his mother was a homemaker.
Hunt attended local schools and graduated from high school in 1865. He then enrolled at Valparaiso University, where he studied for two years before returning home to help his family farm.
In 1873, Hunt married Sarah Ann McFadden, with whom he would have four children: Alice (1874-1953), John (1876-1956), William Jr. (1878-1952), and Frank (1880-1963). The family continued to live and work on the farm until 1888, when Hunt decided to pursue a career in politics.
He was elected as a Republican to the Indiana House of Representatives, serving from 1889 to 1893. He then served in the Indiana Senate from 1893 to 1897. In 1898, he was elected as a U.S. Representative from Indiana’s 4th congressional district, a position he held until 1903.
Hunt ran for reelection in 1902 but was defeated by Democrat Thomas Taggart. After his time in Congress, he returned to Wanatah and resumed farming until his death on January 1, 1912. He is buried in Lindenwood Cemetery in Wanatah.
The park's history
The William F. Hunt Memorial Park is named after one of Wanatah’s most famous residents, Dr. William F. Hunt. Dr. Hunt was a highly respected doctor and surgeon who practiced in Wanatah for over 50 years. He was also an avid outdoorsman and Conservationist, and was instrumental in the creation of the Indiana Dunes State Park.
The park itself is located on the site of the former Wanatah School, which was built in 1874 and served as the town’s primary school until it closed in 1960. The school building was then used as a community center until it was demolished in 1971. The land on which the school stood was donated to the town by Dr. Hunt’s widow, and the park was established shortly thereafter.
The park features a playground, picnic pavilion, and walking trails, as well as a monument to Dr. Hunt that was erected by his friends and colleagues.
